Coal Tit: UK Status: Resident over most of the British Isles. Habitat: This species inhabits urban and suburban areas, and is also found on heaths, moors and light wood lands. They like a plentiful supply of insects, nuts and seed. Breeding: Nests are made in tree hollows and other such niches, they are constructed from moss, spiders webs and fur, the cup is lined with hair and breast feathers. There are seven to twelve glossy white eggs, speckled with reddish brown in a clutch. From first starting to incubate the eggs to fledging the whole process takes about four weeks. Incubation takes about two weeks, and nestlings fledge in about another two weeks. There is sometimes two broods per year. Comment: This beautiful tit is similar in appearance to the Great Tit, however it lacks the dark stripe down it's chest, and has a white patch on the back of it's neck, just below the black head cap. Other similar species are the Marsh and Willow Tits.
